Magical Scotland

For anyone who has not yet visited Scotland for themselves, let me assure you that you are missing a very special treat. I can think of nothing that this wonderful country does not offer. And the people have made me feel at home after a few short years. The history of Scotland reaches far back into the early peoples of bronze age. And of course the castles - both inhabited and in ruin decorate the land like jewels cast by a giants hand.

Argyll

Argyll is an exquisite blend of gentle glens, rugged peaks and the ever changing sea that is guaranteed to inspire you and help recharge your batteries. The county is north of the central belt of Scotland with its fine cities. The drive from Glasgow to Ashwhin is two hours (so long as you are confident on wiggly roads!). To the north of us lie the Highlands, and to the west lie the inner Hebridean islands. Several of which are near enough for a days visit.

Whilst we overlook the sea and are surrounded by a lovely wild garden, Ashwhin is just 3 miles north of Oban

Ashwhin is easy to find and accessible!

By Air

It is possible to fly into Oban airport, although the service is limited. And, during the summer, there is a seaplane that lands in Oban harbour.

However, the larger airports are found in and around Glasgow. Glasgow airport has a regular bus service to Oban and a more frequent bus service into the city where you will be able to take either train or Coach to Oban

Both Glasgow and Preswick airports provide car hire, and the normal journey times are 2-3 hours from the airport to our front door.

Train and Coach/Bus

Oban has a regular coach service from Glasgow, and from many other cities in Scotland. The local train is far less frequent, though it affords marvellous views along the way - it also takes rather longer than the bus. If you use either one, we are happy to pick you up in Oban, simply let us have your arrival time!

Activities, amenities and places to visit in the Oban Area

We are lucky enough to have a local shop that provides most anything you can think of, and it is open until 10:00 pm every evening.

Oban is just three miles from Ashwhin, and provides an excellent place to eat from simple fish & chips to gourmet cuisine. And there are plenty of shops to explore for those perfect souvenirs. We keep an up to date selection of all the tourist information available in the retreat for you to peruse at your leisure.

I arrived at Ashwhin exhausted in body, mind and spirit. I leave one week late, for and with. a life and future with joy and good health. Derby, the furbabies and this special place have helped in ways that words can't cover. Blessed be.

The simplest way to drive here (from Glasgow)

Take the Erskine Bridge north out of Glasgow

Follow the A82 up the west side of Loch Lomond to Tarbet.

Then take the A83 to Inverary. When you get to Inverary, you will go over a small hump backed bridge with a traffic light controlling the flow of traffic.

A few hundred metres beyond this you will come to the A819 on your right - take this road (it is quite unusual as the entrance is an archway linking a hotel on one side and a tourist centre on the other).

Continue all the way up the A819 past Loch Awe until you reach the T junction at the end of the road.

Turn left at the T junction (only 20 minutes from here). You will pass through the villages of Lochawe, Taynuilt and Connel. The turning for Ashwhin is approximately two miles beyond Connel - it will be sign posted Dunbeg and Dunstaffnage Castle.

Turn right into Dunbeg,

Then turn right again at the sign for Dunstaffnage Castle. Immediately after the cattle grid our driveway is on your left - with an obvious sign for Ashwhin. Just come all the way up the drive into the main courtyard and you are here
